Ex-Mayor Cleared of Charges

April 10th, 2008 · No Comments

The former mayor of Taylortown, North Carolina, was recently cleared of three misdemeanor charges. Thirteen months ago, Ulysses S.G. Barrett Jr. was charged with fraud, holding two public offices at one time, and profiting from a public contract as a public official.

Barrett Jr.’s work as an unlicensed contractor led to the charges after he began work on a house that the town owns that was going to be used for after school programs. The cost of the work to be done was close to $29,000. Acquitted of the fraud charge, Barrett Jr. was lucky enough to have the other two charges dismissed. There is, however, a continuting investigation as to his work as an unlicensed contractor.
